Kat Moore’s January 2009 Hossey Award Picks
I’m Kat, and these are my January picks….
Show Schedule | Contest Rules | The Awards
Back Porch Mary – This Band (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2
- Dave (Mr. Kat) picked this one! BPM is a very cool up & coming band out of Austin. They have a reputation for being very personable & hanging out with their fans – thinking of their fans as family. The band has been gigging for years now & most recently released their fourth album – Time Of The Broken Heart . They have a style all their own & have always stayed true to their sound never worrying about fitting in to some specific market. What can I say, that’s just really cool!
Corey Morrow – He Carries Me (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the Contest after Week 3
- Cory is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter from Austin with over 15 years of experience & several albums under his belt. I chose this song not just because it’s a great song – but because it’s refreshing to hear a song with a strong spiritual meaning in a market where every other artist is capitalizing on drinking, cheating & lying! Cory has managed to write such a song & still be cool. That’s worth a few votes! ïŠ
Hayes Carll – I Got a Gig (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2
- Again, a Dave pick & he couldn’t have made a better choice if you ask me! Hayes is a talented artist from Houston. His genuine signature “twang†makes him stand out in the vast sea of “Texas Country†artists that are currently getting air play – you know him the minute you hear him. Hayes has been reviewed by just about every major newspaper & magazine across the country & it’s all been good! His latest album – Trouble In Mind – was released in 2008.
Damnwells – I’ll Be Around (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the Contest after Week 3
- The Damnwells are one of the coolest bands around in my opinion. They’re from Brooklyn, New York but if you ask me they sound like Austin, Texas. Their sound is a unique mix of alternative, country & pop.
Jason Moore – A Way Out (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the Contest after Week 4
- Jason is a native Texan & currently resides in Denton where he is a full-time student at the University Of North Texas. He has been writing music & performing acoustic shows at the local area college bars for the past couple of years & has most recently joined the up & coming Pop Punk band Jordan’s Whisper serving as Lead Vocalist & musical collaborator.
Juliana Hatfield – Because We Love You (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the Contest after Week 4
- Originally from Boston, Juliana has more than 20 years experience in the recording business. In the early ‘90’s she was signed to Atlantic Records, moved on to record on Zoe/Rounder Records & eventually made it back to her Indie roots currently recording on her own label – Ye Olde Records. Juliana has just released her 10th solo album – How To Walk Away. I have been listening to her for years & she has most definitely been a major influence for me as I have always considered her to be an incredible songwriter who has never been given proper credit for her contributions to music.
Lost Immigrants – Dixie Queen (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2
- Lost Immigrants is a band out of Dallas that was formed in 2004. Their debut album – Waiting On Judgement Day – is stirring huge interest & they are quickly developing a devoted fan base throughout Texas & abroad. I love this song & feel strongly that people will agree that it is worthy of many votes!
Maren Morris – All That It Takes (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2
- Maren is a very talented young singer/songwriter from Arlington, TX. She has been performing live for many years, recording her first CD at age 14. Her most recent album – All That It Takes – was released in 2007. Ft. Worth Weekly called Maren – “a tiny hurricane of blue-eyed soul†& when you experience her, you will understand why. I especially love the sweetness in Maren’s vocals & I find her lyrics particularly impressive.
Steve Helms Band – What’s It Gonna Take (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2
- Steve is a Texas native & grew up in Cleburne. He has played music & performed live for most of his life most recently forming the Steve Helms Band about 4 years ago. His first single was released in April of ’08 & they are currently promoting my pick – What’s It Gonna Take – which is single # 2 off of their self-titled debut album. The Steve Helms Band plays all over the DFW Metroplex & are a regular act at Billy Bob’s Texas in Ft. Worth.
The Kat Moore Band – Bruises and Broken Dreams (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the Contest after Week 3
- This is a song that is very special to me. I want the message in this song to reach as many people as possible but I also realize that due to the dark subject matter that it may be difficult to market. That’s why I decided to include it in my picks as this is a perfect opportunity to share it – & sadly, it may be our only opportunity. Our goal here is not to be a winner – let me be clear that our only focus in this situation is to give a voice to the victims in this story, particularly to the children who will forever carry the physical, mental & emotional scars of domestic violence.
About Me:
I grew up in music, raised by parents that played professionally 5-6 nights a week here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. I distinctly remember sitting in front of the record player for hours at age 4 trying to sound like my favorite singer – Linda Ronstadt. I began performing at age 11, by my early teens I was gigging 3-4 nights a week & continued to try to build a name for myself locally. Most recently my husband Dave Moore (guitars) & I formed The Kat Moore Band & are finishing up our first original album – Big Texas Sky – which is set for release in March ’09. The rest of The Kat Moore Band family is Tommy Watts (drums), Tom Sullinger (keys) & Dan Pockrus (bass).

Way to go, Kat! Nice song selection.
Back Porch Mary is one hell of an act, I first saw them in Alpine TX at the Railroad Blues and then met back up with them in Lubbock, Bash’s #2!! Cory Morrow still makes long lasting hits that will stick around for years to come. I really wish he’d tour California! Good picks chick!
Can we pre-order your album somewhere, or do we have to wait until March to buy it? We love your sound!!
Hey Kat; Your ten picks are awesome, especially Back Porch Mary. Unfortunately, they’re going down to my ten picks in the coming week, now that I’m out of the hospital and can promote my own choices. Love, Tony
