Interesting notes about the January contest:

  • Guest DJ Tony Kinsel’s songs got the most votes in January, so he wins the automatic invitation to return as a guest DJ in February. Tony is well on his way to repeating as Guest DJ of the year on HossTheBoss.com. His pick of Gary Bonnett proved to be pure genius for the contest.
  • Guest DJ Eric Malmstrom was the big winner in the 2008 version of this contest with his band Bretheren Sol, so Hoss invited him to be a guest DJ in January. His picks included a rare recording from the late Waylon Jennings and his bands had, overall, the most impressive music industry credentials of any guest DJs picks today. Unfortunately, most of his great picks bombed in the contest during the first two weeks! But that doesn’t mean they weren’t GREAT songs by GREAT bands.
  • Guest DJ Kat Moore finished a close second to Eric in the 2008 contest, so Hoss figured she was a perfect choice for the January contest, too. Her picks included several dark songs that do not necessarily reflect her happy, healthy, upbeat personality, but she picked them because, the music biz being what it is, she is pretty confident that the songs won’t get much airplay anywhere else. That kind of strategy is what HossTheBoss.com is all about! Kat introduced us all to some great bands that a lot of people probably hadn’t ever heard of before.
  • Hoss has his most successful month of pickin’ to date. Lance Strode and Geoff Union topped his list of great vote-gettin’ picks.

Hoss, I’ve been listening to this site since the beginning of the month, really enjoy the contest and the great music (Roger Creager & Augie Meyers, WOW), but I do have a complaint. I started listening when a friend of mine said ya’ll played Robert Earl Keen. I have had this website on my computer at work and at home for 19 days now, and I have not heard a single Robert Earl Keen song. What gives?

    Jeff Reply:

Me again. I just looked through your music store listing and you don’t even have Robert Earl Keen listed there, or on the page where it says what musicians you play. I guess my friend lied to me.

    Hoss The Boss Reply:

Major oversite! Yes, of course, we play Robert Earl Keen… I am going to pump him up in the automated rotation today (because even Tony Kinsel, the guy who got Robert Earl’s permission for us to play his music says he’s not heard a REK song on the station. I assure you that he HAS been playing on the station for several months, however. Just not nearly enough, apparently.

In regard to Robert Earl Keen not being listed in the store.. well… that’s just a clerical error that will, also, be fixed by this time tomorrow.

In fact… I’m now thinking that, perhaps, we should do an week in which we devote an entire three or four hours a day to nothing but Robert Earl Keen… just to make up for everything. :) Will that work for you! I’ll put it in the works to do it later this week or first of next week.

Hey Hoss, that sounds like a great idea to me. Maybe you can include the new double cd I just got called “Undone, a Musicfest Tribute to Robert Earl Keen”. It’s not only got REK doing live versions of 5 of his own songs, but also has alot of other Texas musicians (that I’ve gotten permission to play) doing his music, like Reckless Kelly, Rich O’Toole, Micky & Gary Braun(Micky & The Motorcars), Cody Canada(Cross Canadian Ragweed), Roger Creager, Cory Morrow, Jason Boland, and Randy Rogers, among others. If you want to add it to the computer Hoss, just drop on by my house and pick it up. It’s a good one.

I guess Hoss didn’t reset the voting right, since I am still locked out because I voted this morning. I guess I have to wait to vote until tomorrow morning. Bummer!!

    HossTheBoss.com Administrator Reply:

Actually, you’ve brought up something that I just don’t know how to fix: you can only vote once a day. Period. Even on Saturdays. So, if you vote on Saturday morning before the show, well, you’re going to be locked out after the show.

I’d like to be able to adjust it so that people can vote twice on Saturdays. But the technological limitations of our shoestring operation just won’t allow it. Such is life. :)

Had the opportunity to see and hear DB Rielly live last night! DB and his band are fabulous! If you are anywhere near where they’re playing.. GO. You won’t be disappointed. If you can’t seem ‘em, check out the CD. They got my vote!

Hey everybody; I just wanted to say thanks for everyone who is voting for my picks, I wish I could have been on the show today to talk about them, but Hoss did a good job, and, now we know where Gobbler’s Knob is. I’m waiting to hear from my doctor again to see if I need to go back in the hospital, since I can’t breathe and am coughing my ass off, not to mention feeling horrible. I’ll let Hoss know later this week how things are going with me, but everybody needs to keep voting for my remaining 9 choices so I’ll have all 5 of the top picks next Saturday, when, hopefully, I will be back.

We were lucky enough to see Gary Bonnett and his fabulous band at the Museum Club in Flagstaff over the holidays. They put on an unbelievable show. If you want to have a great night out, you have to see him.
