Luna’s June 2009 Hossey Award Picks
I’m Luna, and these are my June picks….

Show Schedule | Contest Rules | The Awards
Bud Carroll and Southern Souls – Hell Raisin’ Kind (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after Week 3
- Jimmy Lykens plays bass, and he’s from Boone County, West Virginia, which makes his soul pure. Steve Barker plays drums, and he’s from Boone County, but we aren’t sure if his soul is pure or not. Jon Cavendish is the newest member of the Southern Souls. Bud Carroll’s soul is definitely pure, and he puts it on display for all to see, nightly. Blues, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, Dirty Rock and Roll, Elvis Costello…that’s what they are into and that’s what they sound like, sometimes. Other times they sound different…you should go and see what they sound like, you just might like it….alot.
Jeff Zentner – If This Is To Be Goodbye (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after week 2
- Jeff is from Ashville, North Carolina, home of the city square drum circle. His songs feature acoustic instruments and other artists. “If this is To Be Goodbye†has Kentucky’s own Josie Little on back-up vocals.
Laidback Country Picker -Shotgun Walter (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after Week 3
- Legendary Nashville sideman from the 60s. He decided to stop making everyone else rich and cash in himself. He wrote and album worth of songs. Nobody liked them. Now he is bitter and on the draw! “Shotgun Walter” is about Walter Cronkite smoking pot in Vietnam.
Mighty Jeremiahs – Ain’t No Room In This House for Hell (Buy, Dang It)
(Booted from the contest after Week 1)
- If you’re a Les Paul-through-Marshall fanatic and believe that the ripe, searing sounds of Paul Kossoff with Free, Mick Taylor with the Bluesbreakers, and Fresh Cream-era Eric Clapton represent the apex of Sunburst tone, then don’t miss Greg Martin’s plangent licks with the Mighty Jeremiahs. Band members also include Wet Willie’s former lead vocalist and harmonica player, Jimmy Hall and Jon McGee. Also appearing with Mark Hendricks, Dean Smith, The Kentucky Headhunters, and more.
Night Train – Nashville Connection (Buy, Dang It)
Finished 4th for June!
- Eastern Kentucky hillbilly rock band inspired by the Georgia Satellites and The Kentucky Headhunters. Two thirds of the band reformed to make “Super Chimp”. Nashville Connection is a song about a struggling fine young country singer. Website: www.myspace.com/superchimpmusic
Paul Callicoat – Raining Fire (Buy, Dang It)
Finished 2nd for June!
- Paul Callicoat has been a musician at the foothills of the Appalachians in the Tri-state region of West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky for over four decades now. His main focus is on songwriting and he frequently performs in several capacities. Some include Jay Oakes, Traci Ann Stanley, Sasha Collete, Joe Lambiotte, Bob Shortridge, Jeff Ellis, and as a Beatnik Cowboy with Kentucky’s own Rob McNurlin.
Rob McNurlin – On The Rock and Roll (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after Week 3
- Rob McNurlin was raised in Eastern Kentucky, the hymns in church, the Johnny Cash Show on TV, a harmonica from his grandmother, his parents records and a guitar on his ninth Christmas set him on a very musical path. Website: www.robmcnurlin.com
Rufus Huff – Shirley’s (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after Week 1
- Rufus Huff is a four piece band named after two obscure bluesmen, Whistlin’ Rufus and Luther Huff. An eclectic mix of rock, funk, blues, boogie and “Dixie” through a stack of Marshall amps. Band members include Greg Martin, Dean Smith, Chris Hardesty, and Jarrod England.
Sasha Colette – Ribbons (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after Week 3
- Born loving the sounds of Billy Joe Shaver, the Truck Stop Juke Box and the lofty sounds of Neko Case, Colette draws from the blending of Traditional Folk, Country Blues, and the occasional Alternative feel and sweet talks it all down with a little bit of rich southern front porch melodies that, with no problem, make Sasha Colette a definite joy to the eye and ear.
Toonce The Singing Lady – Regular Toonce Whitt Christmas (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after week 2
- This mysterious lady loves tunes, playing strings, writing rhymes, and meeting people who understand her rage. She is based out of Denton, Arkansas with obvious breathing challenges and a very vocal dog.
About Me:
Howdy! I am Luna from eastern Kentucky. I’ve been singing and playing for many years in different bands and I enjoy going to see bands known and unknown. I have a soft spot for public/internet radio stations as they are the only stations where you can connect to a real live person. Listening to real DJs with different tastes in music introduce ME to new CDs to buy and listen to. Some DJ personalities are just a joy themselves to listen to. I am very excited to be a part of the “Hoss the Boss” team for the month of June.

I had to vote for myself. Nashville took the best years of my life. Now I am forced to live on welfare and eat potted meat . Then I hear Farron Young on the radio! Some of his kids are getting a nice fat royalty check while I eat tripe…
