Andrea Marie & The Magnolia Band–Small Town Girl (Buy, Dang It)
- Andrea Marie & The Magnolia Band are a 5 person group from Spicewood, Texas, playing Folk Rock, Texas Country & Bluegrass Music. The group is led by Andrea Campise on lead vocals & rhythm guitar (with banjo coming soon), Heather Lynn on background & lead vocals, John Fink on lead guitar, Aaron Michaels on drums, and Price Porter on pedal steel and harp. (They’re currently holding auditions for a bass player.) Their sound has been described by critics as “Patsy Cline meets Norah Jones with a blend of country- western, jazz and folk”.. 2009 has been a good year for the band, as they’ve been the opening act for groups like Slow Rollin’ Lows and Ray Wylie Hubbard. On the 4th of July, they’ll be playing at Stingfest 2009 in Crystal Beach, Texas. I’ve chosen their song “Small Town Girl” for the contest. It’s off their cd “Someday” that was released in 2007.
Boomswagglers–12 of Pearl (Buy, Dang It)
Booted from the contest after Week 1
- Boomswagglers are Spencer Cornett and Lawson Bennett. They’re from Georgetown, Texas, playing Texas Country, Folk & Punk Music. When I thanked them for giving me permission to play their music on HTB, they responded by thanking me for “wanting to play our shit”! They also sent me a copy of their cd “Barefoot & The Texas Rig” (available through their website), to add to the HTB computer. I was originally going to choose their song “Trailer Park Special” for the contest, but my lovely wife, Peggy, didn’t care for the theme of the song, which is about a guy being upset that his girlfriend blew her brains out in his new double-wide trailer and got blood all over the place. So, instead, I chose the song “12 Of Pearl”, about a guy going fishing with a 12 pack of Pearl Beer. (Gettin’ so drunk on Pearl, that he had to hurl!) ‘Nuff said!…..
Chad Hammock Band–Follow The Lone Star (Buy, Dang It)
- Chad Hammock Band is from College Station, Texas, playing Texas Country & Southern Rock Music. They’re a 4 man group, led by Chad Hammock on lead vocals & guitar, “The Reverend” Austin Desgin on lead guitar and harmony vocals, Jorge “Pablo” Urquidi on bass, and Miles “Big Sexy” Stone on drums. Chad began his career as a solo act, producing a cd called “Rough Cuts”, which is available through Hoss’s music store link to Amazon.com. Last month, I chose his song “Midnight Train”, (written by Cody Canada of Cross Canadian Ragweed), off “Rough Cuts” for the contest, but it didn’t make it into the top ten. This month, I’ve chosen his song “Follow The Lone Star”, off the band’s new cd “Shadows On The Wall. Chad says 2009 looks to be a breakout year for his group, as they’ve already been opening for groups like No Justice, Stoney LaRue & The Arsenals, Wade Bowen, Jack Ingram and Ray Wylie Hubbard…
Hill Country Jane–Legend Of The Beaver River (Buy, Dang It)
- Hill Country Jane is a 4 man group from Highlands, Texas, playing Texas Country & Southern Rock Music. Ryan Lochridge leads the group on vocals and acoustic guitar (and writes all their songs), “Chicago” Joe Penley is lead guitar and vocals, Brian “Dirty” Miller is on bass and vocals, and Danny Stasny’s on drums. Critics refer to their sound as “Redneck Rock ‘N’ Roll”. I chose another song of theirs for an earlier contest, “As It Is In Texas”, (which I still think should be the new Texas State Anthem), but it didn’t make it into the top 5, so I promised Ryan in an interview we did with him that I would choose another song of his for July’s contest. That’s why I’ve chosen “Legend Of The Beaver River”, off their only cd “The Great Charade.” Listen carefully to the lyrics of this one!…
JJ Henson Band–That Kinda Guy (Buy, Dang It)
- JJ Henson Band is from San Antonio, Texas, playing Texas Country & Southern Rock Music. They’re a 5 person group, led by JJ Henson on vocals and guitar, (and he writes all their songs), Glen Mead on lead guitar, Shawn Irey on bass, Ty Wilkinson on drums and featuring Amy Hermes on fiddle. (Amy also has her own MySpace page, look for Amy Hermes fiddlerintheband. She’s from New Braunfels and plays the fiddle in several groups). JJ has the distinction of being the only one of my picks to have ever visited my double-wide trailer in Corpus Christi, ( Studio 2b), when he drove down here from San Antonio and brought me his debut cd “On A Night Like This”, which I promptly entered into the computerized rotation on HTB. I’ve chosen his song “That Kinda Guy” for their entry in the contest. Their cd is available through Hoss’s store link to CDBaby…
Mary Jane–Let The Fire Begin (Buy, Dang It)
- Mary Jane are a 5 person Psychedelic Folk Rock Music band from the Southern Coast of England, consisting of Nick B. Davies on drums and percussion, Martin Griffin on bass, Jo Quinn on vocals, flutes, recorders, flageolets, fiddle and bodhran, Gillie Hotston on violin and backing vocals, and Paul Alan Taylor on acoustic, electric & 12 string guitars, bouzouki and bouzar. I first got permission to play this group last summer, and have been waiting for their cd “Eve” to come out. They also just sent me a cd/dvd, featuring 3 songs from “Eve”, and I’ve chosen “Let The Fire Begin” for their entry in the contest. You know how much I like Celtic Music…
Redneck Jedi–Southern By Birth (Buy, Dang It)
- Redneck Jedi is a 3 man group from the Hill Country area of Texas, playing Southern Rock, Americana & Classic Rock music, or what they call “Pure Texas Rock ‘N’ Roll”. The group was founded by Dennis Phillips, who plays lead guitar .The other 2 members are Jeff Foeh on lead vocals & rhythm guitar, and David Beinke on drums. (They’re currently holding auditions for a bass player.) They have 2 cds available. Their 1st entitled “Black & White”, and their latest “RoadRunner”, from which I’ve chosen their song “Southern By Birth” for the contest. Considered one of the hardest working acts in Texas, they’re currently working on a video of the song “RoadRunner”, and are working on a live concert cd/dvd that they recorded last April inside the cave at Longhorn Cavern State Park in Texas. Their next project is to enter the studio in January of 2010 to produce a cd they’ve already entitled “Radio Ready”…
Rob Dues Band–Lost Connection (Buy, Dang It)
- Rob Dues Band are from College Station, Texas, playing Texas Country & Southern Rock Music. They’re a 3 man group, led by Rob Dues, singer, song-writer & guitarist, with Travis Holland on drums, and Michael Adams on bass and backup vocals. Their sound has been described as a blending of Country, Jazz and Blues Music, with a Dave Matthews guitar style. Their debut cd “Lost Connection” came out in June and Rob sent me a copy of it to add to the HTB computer. I’ve chosen the title track for their entry in the contest, (although it was a tough choice, as I liked every song on it, especially “The Kingdom Of Zilch”). The band is on the road this summer promoting their cd, with concerts in Houston, Austin and surrounding areas…
The Whipsaws–Jessi Jane (Buy, Dang It)
- The Whipsaws are from Anchorage, Alaska, playing Americana, Rock and Roots Music. They’re a 4 man group, with Aaron Benolkin on lead guitar, lap steel, banjo and vocals, James Dommek, Jr. on drums, guitar and vocals, Evan Phillips on vocals, guitar and harp, and Ivan Molesky on bass. The Whipsaws were one of the first alt-country groups I approached for permission to play their music last summer, as I already had 2 of their cds in my collection, and they were all for it. They even introduced me to their friends, another Alaskan group called “Sweating Honey”, who also gave me permission to play their music. The Whipsaws now have 2 cds to their credit, “Ten Day Bender”, and “60 Watt Avenue”, from which I’ve chosen their song “Jessi Jane” for their entry in the contest. They’re also offering a new single “Dr. Please” for download through their website. Unfortunately, the band has been on hiatus since August of 2008, due to a chronic injury that lead singer Evan Phillips suffered some years ago. Although that injury has not been fully corrected, the band is expected to start performing live again this month, and are expected to start work on a new cd later this year, for release in 2010…
Tres Womack–American Dream (Buy, Dang It)
- Tres Womack is from Austin, Texas, playing Americana, Alternative & Texas Country Music. Tres grew up in Brownwood, Texas and spent the last 3 years fronting his own band in Austin, as well as a band called the getocowboys, both original, alt-country bands. Tres has several cds to his credit, 2007’s “Freak Show” and 2008’s getocowboys cd “Hard Luck Symphony”, as well as 2005’s EP cd “Real Simple” (produced by Drew Womack), from which I’ve chosen his song “American Dream” for his entry in this contest. Tres Womack’s cds are available through Hoss’s music store link to Amazon or I-Tunes…
About Me:
I got started in broadcasting during my stint as a Signalman in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era, working part-time as a DJ and newsman for a ship-board Armed Forces Radio & TV station on the USS Truckee out of Norfolk, Virginia. After being honorably discharged in 1979, I became a mainstream radio DJ and News Director in the Corpus Christi area for over 25 years on 9 different stations, including all 3 of the country-western ones. During that time I received 4 news broadcasting awards, 1 from the Associated Press & 3 from United Press International. I spent the last 5 years of my “career” on KFTX in Corpus Christi, constantly fighting with the program director over having to play their narrow top-ten Nashville music playlist of songs, when I really wanted to play Texas Music. I was finally shown the door after I played a Christmas-time phone request for Robert Earl Keen’s “Merry Christmas From The Family”, which was definitely not on the station’s playlist, (I really hate that word!). Now that I’m on HossTheBoss I can play what I want. Listen to my own live show every Sunday at 7 p.m. ….
