Hi, I’m Paul, and these are my picks
Show Schedule | Contest Rules | The Awards
13 Bats – American Jesus Freak (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped After Week 1
This wonderful bunch of phsychobilly rock n rollers hail from the capital of Spain, Madrid…with a crazy Californian twist in the shape of their drummer, CARTER (aaaahrgh) whom I’m glad to say I met around 16 years ago, when I lived in Madrid and fronted the band ‘A Glasgow Kiss. We have remained good friends ever since.
Dani & Albert cover the sexy leopard skin double bass and the Cadillac esqe Gretch guitars for this trio. Making big noises in Spain and around Europe the guys are also currently on tour in the UK with a few shows I’m delighted to say, in Edinburgh and my home town of Glasgow, where I will be catching up with them for a few beers.
I have chosen the song ‘American Jesus Freak’ for this contest, however they also have a list of other equally rock n rolly great songs to choose from including all the tracks from their new cd 13 Bats which is available via their myspace site if you go to….. www.myspace.com/13batspsychobilly
Dang, dang, dang, dang, where do you come from boy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big George And The Business – She Don’t Shine (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped After Week 1
Horse Mcdonald is simply an amazing singer/songwriter from Glasgow Scotland. With at least half a dozen or more albums to her name she has wooed audiences around the globe with her beautiful voice and songs. Touring with the likes of Tina Turner and BB King to name but a few, you have got to see this lady live.
The song I have chosen (Careful) was recorded live in concert and features the wonderful strings of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Recently Will Young of Pop Idol fame covered this song in his live show.
I was fortunate enough to have been invited to play support for Horse at her sell out concert in Glasgow a few years back and I’ve never forgotten the great night I had playing to her amazing fans.
I met up with her again recently at one of her concerts in Liverpool (home of The Beatles) where she kindly agreed to allow me to put this song forward for the November show. I hope you enjoy it.
There is whole load more info on Horse which you can check out for yourself on her website www.randan.org or listen to (or purchase) her songs on www.myspace.com/horserandan
Get your votes in.
Iain Forbes- Who Are You (Buy, Dang It)
Iain Forbes is my best pal so you’ve got to vote for him (only kidding). Seriously though, he is my dear friend and an amazing guitarist. He plays all the guitar parts on my CD ‘Pablo’s Vineyard’ and did a ton of other stuff in the making of it to.
Also from Glasgow, Scotland Iain has been playing live at various guitar festivals throughout the UK this year. If you like your guitar in a finger pickin’, Chet Atkins style then you’ll love this guy. Appearing alongside the likes of Tommy Emmanuelle, The James Brown Band, Brian Kennedy, Hans Theesink etc, etc Iain has rapidly established himself as a top player on the guitar circuit.
I don’t know if any other acoustic guitar instrumental covers have appeared previously in the contest but I think this one deserves to be heard. Iain also writes his own original material which you can check out now if you go to www.myspace.com/fingersforbes or go on to YouTube where you can watch him perform songs from the likes of Jimmi Hendrix and lynard Skynard.
One hell of a guitar player.
Paul Carella -Â A Letter For My Brother (Buy, Dang It)
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Paul is a young Country singer/songwriter straight from the Johnny Cash mould. Just listen to that DEEP voice. He has built up a solid reputation in and around the music venues of Glasgow, including the city’s own ‘Grand Old Opry, as an artist who writes and sings from the heart. With a whole snake skin boot full of songs to choose from I’ve opted for A LETTER FOR MY BROTHER. It’s a song about a prison inmate with a surprising little twist in the tale.Paul is currently living in London, England where he is working on new material and wooing audiences across the city with his wonderful tales of bar fights and late trains.Check out more from Paul on www.myspace.com/paulcarella.
Port Cullas – Castles (Buy, Dang It)
PORT CULLAS are a 3 piece bunch of hairy-scary loonies from Glasgow Scotland consisting of Gaz on lead guitar & vocals, Rab on bass and backing vocals and of course, Big Gerry on drums. The song I have chosen is called ‘CASTLES’ which they describe in their own words as ‘a dark rock tune about the end of medieval time for the human race where basically the people get fucked and the dragons kick ass’.
The band has only been together for a short time but is already earning a reputation as a hard working, serious live act in and around Glasgow. PORT CULLAS should be seen as well as heard in order to experience the cider fuelled hard rock lunacy. They are always remembered by everyone who sees them live as a pyro party of madmen who engage with a feast of tunes devoured by anyone with hungry ears. The band have recently finished recording a brand new e.p so check them out at www.myspace.com/portcullas.
Not for the faint hearted.
About Me:
I’m Paul McCormick and I’m delighted to have been invited on here as one of the guest Dj’s for hosstheboss’ November song contest.
I was born in Scotland, just outside Glasgow and I’ve been writing songs, singing and playing guitar for most of my adult life. I’ve played in venues big and small, all over the world at one time or another (it gets a bit vague after years on the road) in the likes of the USA, Canada, The Caribbean, Europe and the UK. Some of the highlights have been touring with some big names like blues legend, Peter Green (founder member of Fleetwood Mac), support gigs with Rickie Lee Jones, Eddy Reader (Fairground Attraction) Horse McDonald and singing alongside Glenn Tilbrook (Squeeze). I’ve been fortunate enough to have had my songs played on both local and national radio including BBC Radio 2.
You can check out my stuff on www.myspace.com/paulmccormick
