Hear Tony Kinsel’s 10 picks for March this Sunday, February 28th!
I’ve decided to try a theme for my picks for March, 10 groups that have a girl’s name in their name, but no girl with that name in the group. Make sense? Here are my picks, that I will be playing in this order, starting at 7pm CT, 2-28-2010:
Back Porch Mary-Harsh Light Of Day, Backseat Molly-Here In Texas, blacktopGYPSY-Your Turn To Cry, Donna The Buffalo-Man Of Constant Sorrow, Hayseed Dixie-Norfolk Girl, Hill Country Jane-The Great Charade, Pusher Betty-Sand Box, Reckless Kelly-Bird On A Wire, Sunny Ledfurd-Stoned To The Bone & The Wailin’ Jennys–Motherless Child.
Well, what do you think about those picks? Feel free to leave me a comment here. If you don’t know anything about one of these groups, visit my MySpace page. They are all listed on my top 40 friend’s page, down near the bottom, from Back Porch Mary to The Wailin’ Jennys. If you missed my last show, be listening to the replay all this week to hear both of Ruby Jane’s cds, played in their entirety.

Hey Tony, thanks for the spins! Just wanted to comment about the singer/songwriter thing, this is a group effort, and i want to say we (the band) wrote these songs! i couldnt do it with out them! thanks again, great show!!~dave cobb/pusher betty
Hey Tony, Thanks for the opportunity! I just read your pick list…btw, can u guess where the band name came from? Here’s your hint, it comes from a bootleg song of one of the old outlaw country guys…..but not Willie or Waylon. Let me know if you figure it out~Dave Cobb/Pusher Betty

Hey, Dave. I have to admit I’m stumped, at the moment. Do any of our listeners know the answer to the band name question?
Tony, I know you picked “Greasy World” for the contest as the entry for Ruby Jane (and I love that song), but my two favorite songs written by Ruby (and on her new CD) are “Smile On” and “Beautiful You, Happy Me” (which has been selected to be on the soundtrack of an upcoming movie, “Mayor Cupcake”, to be released later this year). I don’t know if you’ve heard them, but they are really great songs, noth the music and the words.

Dang my spelling, that’s “BOTH” the music and the words.

I’ve got to say that I have heard and liked every song on both of her cds, which I played last night on my show. I’m already getting requests to play more of her music next Sunday, so I’ll be sure to play both of the ones you mentioned again. I’m also looking forward to seeing “Mayor Cupcake” later this year. I hadn’t heard about that movie, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I saw Ruby yesterday at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels (another blow-the-audience away performance, that’s the norm for her), she was so excited about being interviewed by Hoss and having her songs played on your station. By the way, I also found out yesterday that she’s going to be the opening act for Ray Price at Gruene Hall a week from Friday, March 5, at 8:00 PM. Ruby’s already had quite a career, at age 15!

Sorry I hit “enter” twice on that last comment, I bought Ruby’s CD at her show Sunday, I noticed on the liner notes she’s playing keyboard and drums on the song “Free” and drums on “Anti-Gravity” (those are both studio recordings). I had heard her say she played the drums and keyboard (although she says not well enough to play them at shows) but that’s the first time I had actually heard her play those instruments. She also plays the dobro.
