Paul Carella’s March 2010 Hossey Award Picks

I’m Paul and These Are My March Picks

A Girl and A Guitar – I Have No Control Anymore

Edgy and raw are the two words that best describe A Girl And A Guitar. Songwriter Carly Jamison expresses herself simply and honestly with the accompaniment of her acoustic guitar. Her recordings are unadorned, uncomplicated, and unapologetic. She presents her songs in a bare bones manner which allows listeners to wrap their imaginations around them and feel as if the words she sings are their own. She captures an intimate soulful quality that draws you in and makes you feel at home, yet her ambiguity peaks your curiosity and leaves you wondering just who this person is.

Carly Jamison is a songwriter who has been writing songs for many years, but who only very recently has decided to make these songs public. With the help of new technologies such as the internet and social networking websites, it has been possible for her to attract many fans and followers without the backing of, or affiliation with, an established record label or publisher. Her songs receive regular play on internet radio stations, music websites, and social sites such as MySpace. Her work has even attracted the attention of a prominent Nashville producer who she is now in talks with regarding a new studio album.

Carly, herself, shys away from the spotlight as she feels that the true focus of attention should be on her work, her music, and her songs, and prefers to let them have center stage.  Her music combines elements of traditional country with elements of blues, roots, folk, rockabilly, and pop, the result of which stretches and defies genre barriers. Her sound is a fusion of early 20th century field recordings, mid 20th century Sun recording sessions, and 21st century sensibilities. Her voice is deep and rich, with a mellow undertone like a fine aged whiskey that hints of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, and Patsy Cline. Her approach is candid and forthright. She writes how she feels and she is not afraid to express her opinions.  Her take it or leave it attitude lies somewhere between a breath of fresh air and a slap in the face. She leaves it up to you to decide.

Her music is available on iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby. You can visit her at www.myspace.com/girlandaguitar

Clan Wallace – Clumsy Lover

Daryl Dasher – Yesterdays

Daryl has been playing music since he was four or five years old, thanks to his Dad and Uncle Jon, who taught him guitar and bass, his Mom, who taught him the importance of harmony vocals and the rock band KISS, who first inspired him. Daryl is proud to be part of the Nashville music community – even though, in his own words refers to himself as, “…just a wee-little guy in a big sea of talent.”

Here is what Daryl has to say about his song – “Yesterdays” is about a feeling I think a lot of us have to go through.  We all want to make changes for the better but we are what we are and some times those changes can be difficult to realize.  The music was inspired by Richie Albright (Waylon Jennings’ original drummer) long before I met him, so it was an amazing twist of fate that I got to record this song with him on drums.  It was produced by long time Waylon Jennings’ bass player, guitarist, and producer Jerry “Jigger” Bridges in Golden, Mississippi.

Daryl’s music is avaliable on itunes. To find out more about Daryl, visit http://www.myspace.com/daryldasher or his website, www.daryldasher.com

Ginni Hogarth – Sweetest Dream

Ginni is a previous winner of “BBC Song of the Year” Competition, singer-songwriter and performer, Ginni, is a powerful talent not to be ignored. As an accomplished pianist, cellist and self-taught guitarist, Ginni has become very versatile in her song writing and performance. She is a vibrant performer with a captivating affect on her audience.

After a successful career in Musical Theatre/TV in South Africa gaining national press and TV coverage, Ginni moved to the UK to pursue her vocation as a singer/songwriter and pianist. With many challenges and without a piano to hand, she took to teaching herself to play the guitar. This opened a whole new approach to song-writing and allowed her to expand in her performance.

Ginni has performed at various venues around the UK, as well as Amsterdam, California and South Africa. Her self-financed debut solo album ‘between these walls’ was released in June 2001 and she toured and promoted this album in the UK solo and with her band. This tour included venues such as The Kings Head – Fulham; The Halfmoon – Putney; Break for the Border – Oxford Circus and many more nationwide. This album sold just over 2500 copies at gigs alone. Read REVIEW.

In July 2004, Ginni released her 2nd album ’sweetest dream’ , which became a limited edition album due to her signing to Madam Music, an independent label in September that same year.

This deal led to her recording her 3rd album ‘GINNI’ at London’s Westside Studios in collaboration with producer James Hallawell. Ginni’s single ‘Jump the Sky’ appeared on the ‘British at Midem’ sampler cd, alongside music from artists such as Nizlope, Goldie Lookin Chain and the Delays.

The 2 year deal came to an end in October 2006.

Ginni is constantly writing new songs and is looking to secure a new record deal which will allow her to release her songs through many albums and to tour, as she thrives on performing live!

Jamie Lynn Noon – Second of a Spark

“I want to run to the edge/Throw caution to the wind/Part of life is risking it all.”

With that powerful chorus from the driving “Second of a Spark,” multi-talented singer-songwriter Jamie Lynn Noon announces her stunning arrival with her debut EP, A Moment to Break.  The 22-year-old California Bay Area native, who cannot recall a time when music was not a part of her life, is in line with contemporaries like Chantal Kreviazuk, Chrissie Hynde and Linda Perry – a gifted artist in her own right, yet one whose songs are natural fits for other prominent performers.  And with A Moment to Break (released January 27, 2009 on Internet digital download retail sites worldwide), Jamie showcases the best of her vast catalogue of hook-laden, irresistibly catchy songs. Jamie Lynn’s music is available through i-tunes and amazon. To find out more about Jamie Lynn Noon, visit her myspace page at www.myspace.com/jamielynnnoon

Joe Sparks – These Games

Joe Sparks is a singer songwriter from Windsor, England. Joe started out at a very early age learning the drums at the age of 8 and then progressed onto the guitar and piano. He started writing songs as a teenager, where he began listening to American bands like Dave Matthews Band, Counting crows and Goo Goo Dolls. His writing style has always been heavily influenced by American music.

These Games is a song about misunderstanding things in life that seem clear to other people, be it relationships, religion or career. The character in the song has hope and confidence but feels that he somehow manages to ‘miss the boat’ and get things wrong. He admires the peace that seems to come with belief and understanding, but just can’t get used to ‘these games’.

Joe’s latest album, Black 26, is avaliable on itunes and all other major download sites. To find out more about Joe, visit http://www.myspace.com/joesparksmusic

Paul McCormick – Tired of Playing Love Games

Paul McCormick is a singer/songwriter originally from East Kilbride (Scotland) but now based on the Fylde coast in North West England. (UK)

Taking his music and songs across the globe, he has played various music festivals in the UK and in other countries including Spain, USA, Canada and Barbados to name but a few.

Following the ‘Fruitmarket’ gig and subsequent review in the Glasgow Herald newspaper, where a vocal comparison to ‘Horse Mcdonald’ was quoted, a chance meeting between the pair led to Horse inviting Paul to be the support act for her up and coming sell out concert at the famous Glasgow Barrowland.

Other major artists Paul has toured with or appeared on stage alongside include Glenn Tilbrook (Squeeze) and Peter Green’s (Fleetwood Mac) Splinter Group, which included Neil Murray (Whitesnake) and Cozy Powell (Rainbow).

Paul’s songs have been played on both local and national radio including BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright Show.

This is the 2nd time that Paul has appeared here on hosstheboss radio. He featured in last years contest with his song ‘THE LETTER’ which was voted into the top 5 of the August heat and subsequently went through to the finals in December, where he managed to get into the top 20. Paul Stone – Beautiful Stranger

After several great years as the lead singer of Stone&King, Paul decided to make the decision to pursue a solo career in the Industry after being messed about for simply too long by a string of false promises. He was offered a chance that could not be refused and decided to jet off on his own musical adventure to Nashville Tennesse to work with some of Americas best. ‘Beautiful Stranger’ was written on the plane after getting the inspiration from new people and new surroundings, it was finished in Nashville after a night out at the Tin Roof then recorded a few days later.  Paul see’s his music as natural and organic and not overproduced sound waves. All Instruments are played as they should be producing a Nashville sound with a European twist. His music will be available on itunes later this year.

You Can’t Eat The Word Food – Better

You can’t eat the word food are a band of 4 like-minded gentlemen who have been operating on the periphery of the Glasgow music scene for the last few years.

The sound they produce can best be summed up in words unhindered by sentences;

Melodic
Energetic
Positive
Enthusiastic
Sharp
Witty
Upbeat and playful are some that have been used to describe them.

At the core burns the spirit of Punk, the ghost of Psychedelia and the ingredient ultimately essential to them, individuality. The culmination of these and their respective musical personalities creates an intriguing feast. Though in its basic form it is guitar based rock, but with lyrics that deal not with the clichés often attributed to this style.
