Tony Kinsel’s February 2011 Hossey Award Picks
I’m Tony, and these are my February 2011 picks…
71 Fish–Yellow Orange Red
71 Fish is a new group from Las vegas, Nevada, featuring Chanin Leo & Deita Klaus, friends of our friends The Barnyard Cupcakes. They sent me their 1st song “Yellow Orange Red”, written by Chanin Leo, produced and engineered by Deita Klaus. I decided to put it in this month’s contest, because I really like their sound. For more on 71 Fish, visit their Karma Radio Network site, www.71fish.com…
Brandon Rhyder–Battery
Brandon Rhyder is from Austin, Texas, playing Acoustic & Texas Country Music. Brandon fronts a 4-man group. playing acoustic guitar and singing, with Keegan Reed on bass guitar (of the Keegan Reed Band from San Antonio, who we also play), Cody Banks on drums & percussion, & Ron D’Argenio on Keyboards. Brandon is represented by Katie Hlavinka of Ambiance Artists Management, who sent me his cd. I chose the song “Battery” off Brandon’s latest cd “Head Above Water” for this month’s contest. By the way, he’ll be appearing in Corpus Christi on February 10th, at Brewster Street Icehouse. He’s also recording a “Live at Billy Bob’s” cd & dvd this month that you can be a part of. Just buy your tickets to his show there in Houston on Feb. 25th, and maybe you’ll be part of the recording. For more info on Brandon Rhyder, visit his MySpace page, www.myspace.com/brandonrhyder, or his website, www.Brandonrhyder.com…
Dusty Dave & The Hill Gillies–High Cost
Dusty Dave & The Hill Gillies are a 2-man group from Las Vegas, Nevada, playing Acoustic & Americana Music. I still don’t know a whole lot about this group, other than it’s fronted by Dusty Dave, who sings and plays guitar, and he’s backed up by his 13 year old son, who plays drums, and guitar. Last month, I chose their re-make of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s song “Drunken Poet’s Dream” for the contest, but they didn’t make the top 5, (they did make it to #8, though!) This month, I chose another song they sent me, “High Cost”, for the contest. I hope you vote them into the top 5 this month, so they’ll make it back to compete in this year’s finals. For more about Dusty Dave & The Hill Gillies, visit their Karma Radio Network site, www.karmaradionetwork.com/ALBUM-samples-10.htm…
Lisa Medina–Mean To Me
Lisa Medina is from Corpus Christi, Texas, playing Acoustic, Alternative & Rock Music. I first ran across Lisa on MySpace last year, liked what she had up on her page, and asked for permission to play her music on HTB. She has no cd out, yet, but sent me a couple of her songs to add to our rotation. Last year I chose the song “Long Over Due” for one of our monthly contests, but it didn’t do very well, (Hoss said it sounded “over-modulated”, whatever that means!) This month, I chose her song “Mean To Me” for her contest entry. I think the sound quality is much better on this one. I hope you vote her into the top 5, this time. For more info on Lisa Medina, check out her MySpace page, www.myspace.com/lisamedina…
Six Gun Britt–A Lonely Lullaby
Six Gun Britt is from Knifley, Kentucky, playing Country, Psychobilly & Rockabilly Music. I first found Six Gun Britt on MySpace a couple of years ago, and, at the time, she’d just come out with a song replying to her friend, Joseph Christ and his song “A Fucking Love Song”. Her song was entitled “Fuck Your Fucking Love Song”. I used both those songs in a contest in 2009, but neither of them made it to the top 5. Then, in 2010, I chose her song “Jack Daniels & PBR” (about going drinking with no panties on!), but it didn’t make it either. We did interview her a couple of times, since both of her songs did make the top 10, so you can probably find downloads of her interviews somewhere on HTB. This month I chose a different kind of song from her, a beautiful, and un-profane song, called “A Lonely Lullaby”. Listen to it, then vote her into the top 5 where she belongs! For more info on Six Gun Britt, visit her MySpace page, www.MySpace.com/sixgunbritt…
The Hilda Lamas Band–Me & Bobby McGee
The Hilda Lamas Band is from Corpus Christi & Port Aransas, Texas, playing Blues, Soul & Other Music. in 2009, Hilda became the first blues artist to be signed to Hacienda Records. She then recorded a 19 song album entitled “Latina Soul”, which I’ve added to our rotation here on HTB, and will be playing in it’s entirety this Sunday night, Feb. 6th, on The Tony Kinsel & Friends’ Show. Hilda is currently touring with her 4-man backup band, consisting of drummer Eloy Martinez, George “Buckshot” Green on guitar, Abel Martinez on bass guitar, & Wayne Harding on keyboards. Hilda sent me her new, live recording of “Me & Bobby McGee”(recorded at Cassidy’s Irish Pub here in Corpus Christi on January 21st, 2010) just as I was choosing my picks for this month’s contest, so I decided that was a sign that I should put her in this month, before Hoss had a chance to choose her. (LOL) Let’s put her in the top 5, too. For more info on Hilda Lama, visit her MySpace page, www.MySpace.com/hildalamas, or her website www.hildalamasinfo/fr_home.cfm…
Wild Horses Band–Kma Goodbye
Wild Horses Band is from Austin, Texas, playing Texas Country, Progressive & Southern Rock Music. They’re a 5-person band, consisting of Michael Blake Mahler, Angela Rae, Ralph McCaully, Steve Kellough, & Lon Holland. I first ran across this group on ReverbNation, which is where I’ve discovered several groups “new to me” lately. I got permission from them to play their music and added their cd “Kma Goodbye” to the HTB rotation. I also decided to add the live, title track of their cd to my picks for this month. It’s a catchy tune about texting. I hope you like it and vote for it, it deserves it. I’ll also be playing the whole cd this Sunday night, Feb. 6th, on The Tony Kinsel & Friends’ Show. If you’re in Salado, Texas on Feb. 19th, you can catch them at Bo’s Barn. For more info on Wild Horses Band, visit their MySpace page, www.MySpace.com/wildhorsescountrymusicband, or their website, www.wildhorsesband.com…
About Me:
I got started in broadcasting during my stint as a Signalman in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era, working part-time as a DJ and newsman for a ship-board Armed Forces Radio & TV station on the USS Truckee out of Norfolk, Virginia. After being honorably discharged in 1979, I became a mainstream radio DJ and News Director in the Corpus Christi area for over 25 years on 9 different stations, including all 3 of the country-western ones. During that time I received 4 news broadcasting awards, 1 from the Associated Press & 3 from United Press International. I spent the last 5 years of my “career” on KFTX in Corpus Christi, constantly fighting with the program director over having to play their narrow top-ten Nashville music playlist of songs, when I really wanted to play Texas Music. I was finally shown the door after I played a Christmas-time phone request for Robert Earl Keen’s “Merry Christmas From The Family”, which was definitely not on the station’s playlist, (I really hate that word!). Now that I’m on HossTheBoss I can play what I want. Listen to my own dang show on the station every Sunday night at 7 p.m. Central.

Just a note to correct one of my bios. I just found out that Brandon Rhyder will be recording his cd/dvd at Biily Bob’s in Ft. Worth, Texas, not Houston, on the 25th of February, 2011.
