Tony Kinsel’s November 2011 Hossey Award Picks

I’m Tony, and these are my November 2011 picks…

29 Mules–Corpus Christi

29 Mules is from Van Nuys, California, playing Country, Southern Rock, & Psychobilly Music. Songwriting duo Casey Cannon and Xavier Gonzalez are described as the “heart and soul” of this group. They met in Los Angeles, while they were working at the Guitar Center, and instantly connected upon discovering they both had roots in Texas and the wilds of the Mojave Desert. After playing around in the Rock & Punk scenes, they decided to go back to their roots, since they grew up listening to Willie, Waylon & Johnny Cash. They have 2 cds to their credit, their 1st, “No Rules For Mules”, and their just-released 2nd cd, “80 Feet Deep”. I 1st tried to get permission to play their music, through their ReverbNation page, about 4 months ago, and they responded last week in the affirmative, apologizing for taking so long to get back with me, saying that neither of them were very “tech savvy”. I’ve since added 7 of their songs to my DJ show here on HTB, some from each of their cds, and chose their song about where I live, “Corpus Christi”, as their November contest entry. For more info on 29 Mules, check out their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/29mules, which has links to all their other social media sites, and info as to where you can buy their cds…

A Boy Named Sioux (w/Pay La V)--Papa Grande

A Boy Named Sioux is from Phoenix, Arizona, playing Outlaw Country Music. They’re a 4-man group, consisting of Rob Toner on vocals & acoustic guitar, Greg Ahmann on guitar, Austin Goff on drums, and Steve Danielak on bass. The band was formed in 2007, and Rob gave me permission to play their music on HTB in 2009. He also sent me their 1st cd, “The Next Big Thing”, to add to the rotation of my DJ show here on HTB. Their song “Pirate Pants” off that cd was the big winner in 1 of our contests during the summer of 2010. We also have a couple of interviews with Rob from that contest somewhere on here. They’ve just come out with a new cd that Rob also sent me, “Simple Life”, and he asked me my opinion of the song “Papa Grande” (featuring a Phoenix rapper named Pay La V) from it. I not only liked it, I chose it as one of my picks for this contest. There are actually 2 versions of “Papa Grande” on the new cd, 1 with the rapper, and 1 without. You should go to their website and listen to both versions, and tell me if you agree that Country Rap adds something to the song. A Boy Named Sioux is 1 of the few groups I like that is not currently on ReverbNation. They do have a website, the address is www.aboynamedsiouxaz.com, and it has links to their other social media sites. You can also buy both of their cds there….

Amanda Bare–Again

Amanda (Maree) Bare is from Alpharetta, Georgia, playing Country, Folk, & Americana Music. Amanda is described on ReverbNation as “A small town girl with  a raw sound”, who’s considered to be on the rise on the C/W scene. She just recently learned to play the guitar, and writes all of her own music. She’s recorded a 3 song demo cd, which I’ve added to the rotation of my DJ show on here, while choosing the song “Again” as her contest entry this month. She says she hopes that her demo cd will attract the attention of musicians and music business professionals everywhere. To listen to her music, and download her 3 songs for free, visit her RN page, www.reverbnation.com/amandamareebare, where she also has links to her other social media sites, like Facebook,Twitter, MySpace & YouTube…

Jamie Nattier–Crooked

Jamie Nattier is from Patoka, Illinois, playing Country & Pop Music. 18 year old Jamie started writing and performing while still in high school. He’s currently in college and performs as a solo act, as part of a duo, and is in the band “Divided Highway”. His mother & manager, Annette Nattier, ran across me on RN and asked if I would listen to her son’s music. I did, liked it, and got permission to play it on HTB. Annette then sent me 3 of his songs, which I’ve added to my show, while choosing the hilarious song “Crooked” as his contest entry. Listen closely to the lyrics. Jamie is a member of ASCAP and the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International. For more info on Jamie Nattier, visit his RN page, www.reverbnation.com/jamienattier, which also has links to his other social media sites, as well as his band “Divided Highway”’s sites…

Jona Leigh–Out On The Town

Jona Leigh is from Phoenix, Arizona, playing Country, Pop, Acoustic & Bluegrass Music. Jona is a singer, songwriter, and lyricist, and is curently writing songs with some of Nashville’s best songwriters. She’s performed with choirs, live local bands, in stage musicals, and is currently recording her debut cd. This year, she performed on KOLD 13 TV in Phoenix on a show called Lucky Break, and also auditioned in LA for the new TV show X-Factor. After she gave me permission to play her music on HTB, I added 2 of her songs to the rotation of my show, and chose one of them, ”Out On The Town” for this month’s contest. For more info on Jona, check out her RN page, www.reverbnation.com/jonaleigh,  which also has links to her other social media sights…

Lonerock–(I Don’t Wanna Get) Even If You’re Leavin’

Lonerock is from Arhus, Denmark, playing Country, Pop, & Rock Music. They’re a 5-man band, consisting of Frank Jensen on vocals & bass, Erik Preetzmann on vocals, guitars & mandolin, Thomas Beck on guitars, Ole Albrechtsen on steel guitar & dobro, & Chang Ostergaard on drums. All of their songs are written and recorded by the band, bringing together elements of modern Country Rock and Scandinavian songwriting in a completely new way. The band was formed in 2006, when Frank & Erik entered the studio with alot of song ideas. In 2008, the rest of the members joined up, and Lonerock immediately began to catch the attention of Danish radio. They chose the name Lonerock from an old Western TV series they’d seen that was set in Oregon, where the town of Lonerock was tucked away at the end of a long, gravel road in a secluded valley. A solitary place with a rough, frontier edge that, in fact and name, perfectly captured the Country Rock spirit of a band some 5,000 miles away. They’ve just come out with their debut cd entitled “Down Moody Street”, which I’ve added to the rotation of my show, and, from which, I chose the song “(I Don’t Wanna Get) Even If You’re Leavin’”. For more info on Lonerock, visit their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/lonerock, which also has links to their other social media sites…

Rowdy Johnson Band–Haunted Guitar

Rowdy Johnson Band is from Tombstone, Arizona, playing Country & Outlaw Country Music. They’re a 5-man band, consisting of Rowdy Johnson on vocals & guitar, Ken Whitcomb on bass & vocals, Bob “Whitey” Hammett on steel guitar, Mike Winkler on drums, & Dan “Steely Daniels” Showalter on steel & lead guitar. “Are there any outlaws left in the world today?” you’ll hear Rowdy Johnson belt out during his song “Outlaw Country”. He grew up during the Outlaw Country Music era in the early ’70’s, listening to Waylon, Willie, Merle, Johnny Cash & Hank Williams, Jr.. He and his band say they are trying to rid the world of pop Country Music, and are quickly becoming the “Voice of the People” when it comes to the Traditional Country Music fans, Southern Rockers, bikers, Miltary Veterans, and “anyone else who are tired of the blah, blah, blah coming out of Nashville these days”. They are due to release a cd this month called “Outlaws Today” which shows a hiway sign for Nashville that’s shot full of bullet holes! I chose their song “Haunted Guitar” (a tribute to Waylon Jennings), for their contest entry. Listen closely to the lyrics, it’s a good one! For more info on the Rowdy Johnson Band, visit their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/rowdyjohnsonband, which has links to their website, and their other social media sites…

Southern Yankee–Not For Nothin’

Southern Yankee is from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, playing Country & Country Rock Music. (They say on their RN page that they’re “Too Rock for Country, & Too Country for Rock!”)  They’re a 4-man group, consisting of Dave Gravino, Vernon Tart, Dave Sweet & Eric Kopel. They’ve been described as “a cross between Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan, with a dash of Allman Brothers Band or Marshall Tucker Band thrown in”.  I used Southern Yankee in a contest last year with the song “Beer” and they did very well. In fact, I believe we have an interview with Dave Gravino & Vernon Tart on here from that contest. They’ve just sent me their newly released cd “The Re-Unification Of Rock & Roll”, which I’ve put into the rotation of my DJ show, and I chose their song “Not For Nothin”, the extended version, which is actually hidden track 15 on that cd. For more info on Southern Yankee, visit their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/southernyankeenc, which also has links to their other social media sites…

Two Door Ford– 809 Blues

Two Door Ford is from Ft. Worth, Texas, playing Country, Texas Country, & Americana Music. They’re a 4-man group, consisting of Zach Figueroa, Ryan Brown, Andy Greatorex, & Joey Hollingsworth. On their RN page, they say Two Door Ford is an up-and-comng band that “combines catchy lyrics with hot guitar riffs to create a unique listening experience.” They were actually recommended to me by The Drive-By Truckers, who were the 4th group to give me permission to play their music when I started doing this back in 2008.  Two Door Ford has just come out with a new cd, “Long Holiday”, which they’ve sent me and I’ve added to the rotation of my DJ show here on HTB. From it, I chose their song “809 Blues” as their November contest entry, because it contains catchy lyrics and hot guitar riffs that I enjoyed listening to. For more info on Two Door Ford, visit their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/twodoorford, which contains links to their website, their other social media sites, and to stores that are selling their new cd…

Vintage–Working For The Man

Vintage is from New York City, New York, playing Rock Music. They’re a 4-man band, consisting of Billy Kohout, Ronnie Ray, Mike Tamer, and Bobby Defino. On their RN page, they say that “Vintage is an old-school hard rock band, with driving rhythms, strong melodies, and a feel from days gone past with a slightly modern edge.” also, “Ronnie Ray and Bobby Defino slam the bottom end of their tracks with a killer foundation in which Mike Tamer takes full advantage of laying down infectious, melodic grooves, sucking the listener in, as Billy Kohout’s smokey, gritty voice takes you on a rock and roll journey, quite reminescent of yesteryear.” I used Vintage’s song “Train Station Boogie” in a previous contest, but it din’t make the top 5, so I decided to bring them back this month with their song “Working For The Man”.  Billy Kohout has already set a record here on HTB, being in 2 different groups that will be in the finals next month, Rooster & Grimm Jack. I’ve now decided to see if he can make it to 3 different groups in the finals. We have an interview with him somewhere on the site, during which he expressed an interest in being a guest DJ. (Something for Hoss to keep in mind for 2012.) For more info on Vintage, visit their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/vintagehardrock, which also has links to their other social media sites…

About Me:

I got started in broadcasting during my stint as a Signalman in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era, working part-time as a DJ and newsman for a ship-board Armed Forces Radio & TV station on the USS Truckee out of Norfolk, Virginia.  After being honorably discharged in 1979, I became a mainstream radio DJ and News Director in the Corpus Christi area for over 25 years on 9 different stations, including all 3 of the country-western ones. During that time I received 4 news broadcasting awards, 1 from the Associated Press & 3 from United Press International. I spent the last 5 years of my “career” on KFTX in Corpus Christi, constantly fighting with the program director over having to play their narrow top-ten Nashville music playlist of songs, when I really wanted to play Texas Music. I was finally shown the door after I played a Christmas-time phone request for Robert Earl Keen’s “Merry Christmas From The Family”, which was definitely not on the station’s playlist, (I really hate that word!). Now that I’m on HossTheBoss I can play what I want. Listen to my own dang show on the station every Sunday night at 7 p.m. Central.
