Tony Kinsel’s February 2012 Hossey Award Picks

I’m Tony, and these are my February 2012 picks…

Hobo–A Song For Piece

Hobo is a group from Corpus Christi, Tx., playing Honkadelic and “Other” Music. the 4-member band has been together for a couple of years now, playing venues in C.C. and other cities in South & Central Texas. The members are Reverend Fred, Nate McLain, Andy Grump, & Anna-Gil. On their ReverbNation page, it says “Musically, we play old country-sounding songs about love, beer, fried chicken, and death, while throwing in a fair share of psychedelic, as well as any other genre that fits… Think Roger Miller and Ween’s lovechild.”  For more info on Hobo, visit their RN page, www.reverbnation.com/txhobo, where you can download 9 of their songs for free, including a couple of Christmas tunes that I’ve already added to our seasonal programming here on HTB, and the song I’ve chosen from them for this month’s contest “A Song For Piece”, (listen closely to the lyrics, I think Turd Ferguson will like this one!)….

Indianola Railroad Co.–Red Head

Indianola Railroad Co. is a group from Corpus Christi, Tx., playing Texas Country Music. They’re a 5-man group, consisting of Scott Smith on vocals & guitar, Tom Robertson on lead guitar, Aaron Stevens on bass guitar, Todd Praesel on fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, vocals, & keyboards, & Jaime Valdez on drums. They have 1 cd out, “Long Road”, from which I’ve chosen several of their songs for past contests. They made the finals last year, after landing in the top 5 in  January of 2011’s contest, with their song “Life Of Living Blues”. This month, I chose another song from that cd, a catchy tune called “Red Head”. I hope you give it the votes it deserves to make it into the top 5 in February. For more info on Indianola Railroad Co., visit their website, www.indianolarailroadco.com, or their MySpace page, www.myspace.com/indianolarailroad. (They don’t have a ReverbNation page.)…

They’re a 5-man group, consisting of Johnny Kiser on lead vocals & rhythm guitar, Eric Briones on drums, Joseph Flores on lead guitar, Matt Pavlicek on bass guitar, & Tommy Pryor on rhythm guitar. On their RN page, it quotes the old saying “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll”, which they say is what they’re doing for Texas Music, as they’re growing and writing new songs. They have 4 songs up for free download on their RN page, and I’ve added all of them to my DJ show here on HTB, while choosing their song “Texas Heroes” for this month’s contest. (Listen closely to the lyrics, Johnny mentions alot of other Texas groups that we’re playing on here!) “Rockin’ Ricke” Burnett–Tryin’ To Live Without Her

“Rockin’ Ricke” Burnett is from Port Aransas, Tx., playing Rock, Blues, & Pink Floyd Music. I 1st ran across 56 year old “Rockin’ Ricke” on ReverbNation, liked what I heard on his page, and asked him for permission to play his music. He was all for it, and told me that he would be happy to hear his songs on “the digital airwaves”. He told me that most of his music was recorded in the mid-’80’s on a cassette recorder, except for the song “Tryin’ To Live Without Her”, which was recorded on a digital system in a bar, which he described as “semi-studio”. I chose that song for his entry in this month’s contest. If you want to see “Rockin’ Ricke” in person, he does a jam session gig at The Tarpon Ice House in Port A., every Sunday, from 5pm to whenever it ends. For more info on “Rockin’ Ricke” Burnett, check out his RN page, www.reverbnation.com/rockinrickburnett

Although Steve is mostly known for his work with the group “The Rachels”, from Houston, Tx., he is currently collaborating with Love Sick Dog Publishing to produce several singles that will be out on I-Tunes later in 2012. After getting his permission to play his music, I downloaded his song “I Can’t Live Without You” to use in this month’s contest. It’s up for free download on his RN page. Steve said he still plans to tour and record with The Rachels this year, but he’s also thinking of going on a solo tour to promote his new singles. For more info on Steve Garcia, visit his RN page, www.reverbnation.com/stevegarcia

Ty Dietz–Wipe It On The Tailgate

Ty Dietz is from Corpus Christi, Tx., playing Folk, Alternative Country, & Americana Music. Ty should be familiar to most fans of HTB, because he’s been in several contests over the past few years, both as one of my picks, and one of Hoss’s. He made last years’ finals, after landing in the top 5 in January of last year with the song “Army Green”. I decided to bring him back for my Corpus-Christi-area themed picks this month with a song he has up for free download on his RN page, “Wipe It On The Tailgate”. It’s a funny song, so listen closely to the lyrics. for more info on Ty Dietz, visit his website, www.tydietzmusic.com, or his RN page, www.reverbnation.com/tydietz, which has links to his Twitter, & Facebook pages, and a link to where you can buy his music from Surf Club Records…

About Me:

I got started in broadcasting during my stint as a Signalman in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era, working part-time as a DJ and newsman for a ship-board Armed Forces Radio & TV station on the USS Truckee out of Norfolk, Virginia.  After being honorably discharged in 1979, I became a mainstream radio DJ and News Director in the Corpus Christi area for over 25 years on 9 different stations, including all 3 of the country-western ones. During that time I received 4 news broadcasting awards, 1 from the Associated Press & 3 from United Press International. I spent the last 5 years of my “career” on KFTX in Corpus Christi, constantly fighting with the program director over having to play their narrow top-ten Nashville music playlist of songs, when I really wanted to play Texas Music. I was finally shown the door after I played a Christmas-time phone request for Robert Earl Keen’s “Merry Christmas From The Family”, which was definitely not on the station’s playlist, (I really hate that word!). Now that I’m on HossTheBoss I can play what I want. Listen to my own dang show on the station every Sunday night at 7 p.m. Central.

You have alot of very good picks from the Corpus Christi area! I do wish you’d brought Scarlet back, though. I really liked them from that contest last year.
