Hoss’s Store Features - Nov. 15

By Don Cudd (aka Hoss) Saturday, November 15th, 2008

It’s “Classic Bands Week” in the store…

Since we usually feature a lot of bands and singers that you’ve never heard of, we figured we’d take a break from that this week just to make sure you know we also have plenty of classic bands in the store. This week’s picks need no elaboration. Time to make sure your music collection is really complete. These aren’t the kind of bands, unfortunately, that you’ll be able to hear just any day on an “Oldies” station and, since, these guys have been kind enough to give HossTheBoss.com special permission to play their music, do your part to spread the love, dang it.

To hear previews of these songs, listen to HossTheBoss.com, dang it!

Hoss’s Store Features - Nov. 8

By Don Cudd (aka Hoss) Saturday, November 8th, 2008
  • Bretheren Sol of Arizona is a cool little band that does a lot of songs straight from the soul of the Wild West. Their song “Across The Desert” is currently killing (most) of the competition in the Hossey Music Award Song Voting Contest.
  • Jack Remington of Nashville is an independent singer who is keeping the spirit of good ole’ country alive despite all the forces — in his very neck of the woods — that want to kill it. His new CD Chameleon includes the song currently in the Hossey Music Award Song Voting Contest “Battered Old Guitar” plus a lot of other fun, refreshingly old sounding, tunes.
  • Rene West of Amarillo, Texas has an album full of songs that are a perfect tribute to the days that President Elect Obama promises to lead us from. If you’re broke, tired and a little pissed off about life, you’ll find a friend in Rene.

Hoss’s Store Features - Nov. 1

By Don Cudd (aka Hoss) Saturday, November 1st, 2008
  • Ty Dietz of Corpus Christi showed up for a local Open Mic night that HossTheBoss.com recorded a few months ago and his song Emory (one of Hoss’s picks in the Hossey Music Award contest) is as powerful and meaningful as they come. We also have a recording of Ty’s various live appearances on HossTheBoss.com.
  • Sam Watson of Midland/Odessa adds an exciting twist to the typical rough-n-tough “Texas style.” She is unashamedly spiritual. That makes her song “Naked” about as powerful and inspirational as you’ll hear. Even Sam admits that this homemade recording is rough from a technical perspective. (Lots of pops on the microphone.) But your like most good Texans, you’ll be able to find a little charm in the imperfections, and you won’t miss out on the amazing voice and inspiring lyrics. This young woman is definitely deserving of support as she spreads her musical gifts to the world.
  • Buzz Nusse of Round Rock is pretty dang funny. And when he’s not doing a funny song, he’s as poingiant as they come in Texas. You might not have heard of him because, with his day job as the City Manager of Round Rock (one of the largest cities in the state these days), he doesn’t have a lot of free time to promote his music. But his new CD is now out, and we’re confident you’ll be glad you bought it.

Hi, I’m Rick, and these are my picks

Show Schedule | Contest Rules | The Awards

Black Oak Arkansas - Lord Have Mercy On My Soul (Buy, Dang It)

This is one of those classic songs from my youth growing up in Michigan! It’s one of those great albums that had a dual use: you  could play it while you sifted it! LOL!

Cooder Graw - Lifetime Stand (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

This is one of my favorite Cooder Graw Songs of all time!

Dave Kirby - 3 Cords and a Bad Memory (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2

Dave and Myself were at an Open Mic at this dive of a biker bar!  Dave asked me if I wanted to play some Hank Sr. Its only three chords! I looked at Dave and said “Sure, Three Chords and A Bad Memory and you have a #1 Country Hit.”  We went back to the table with a napkin and, well, here is what happened!  Thanks, Dave! My brother from a different Mother!

Doug Kershaw - Diggy Diggy Lo (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

I had just moved to Texas from Michigan and the first time I heard this Cajun Music I was glued to the TV!  Amazing sound and rhythm. One of the all time Cajun Favorites!

Hayes Carll - She Left Me for Jesus (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

A great song title and great tune! Kind of say’s it all!  LOL The only way to get left by a woman!

Hayseed Dixie - Fat Bottom Girls (Buy, Dang It)

What can you say. The name say it all and Dixie does a great job with this classic tune!

Jason Marbach - Until The Thrill Is Gone (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

The first time I heard Jason he was hosting an Open Mic I was sponsoring.  What a great talent, great song writer, performer and just an all round nice guy.  You will catch him on GAC some day!

Jim Starr - Sunrise Over Texas (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2

Jim is one of my best friends and a great talent. This man has writtten and recorded more songs that are solid country hits.  You will hear one of his songs on the radio soon! He has played with me in a band I started called the Classic Rock Band. He is one heck of a front man, lead singer, guitar player and all ’round nice guy. I miss the days of sitting around Wharton at Jim’s 75 acre spread on the Brazos River and Jammin!  Thanks for everything, Jim!  Friends like you are hard To find!

Round 7 - Fishin’ (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2

Alex Nelson gave me my first chance at being a musician.  I was about a 3 month old bass player and not very good. The first time I heard this song was at one of our practices. I liked it then and like it even more now!  Thanks Alex!

The Captain Legendary Band - Train Song (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the Contest after Week 1

The first time I heard “Train Song” was when Charlie, Dustin and the band played at a benefit for me after a bit of a heart problem. This is a group of local Houston guys who are livin the dream, touring around Texas and Lousiana.  Great Talent! Great Guys! If Nashville was smart, you would hear them on the radio.  Thanks Charlie. I appreciate You!

About Me:

I guess you would consider me a late in life Musical Bloomer. I picked up my first guitar at the age of 49! I am 52 now. I have been fortunate to meet and play with a lot of artists the last few years. A self taught at the bass guitar, I have played with the following bands in the Houston area:  Round 7, Nine 1 Nine, The Paul Francis Band, The Ali Katz, The Classic Rock Band.  I was one of the original organizers for Houston Musicians Group,  an organization of almost 1000 musicians in the Houston Area.  I’ve spent a good deal of time since I joined the music scene setting up open mics, finding gigs for bands, helping sell gear, and, of course, making new musician friends!  I have been fortunate in being such a new comer to the industry and have had such a diverse exposure. I have been in the recording studio for 4 different Band’s!  And I’ve written and co-written some songs. Currently, my biggest project is a band I started with 2 close friends, Pat Workman and Tom Corkery. We’re called Highway 59! Check us out! I also have the largest bass players website on Myspace.  Over 2500 bass players from every country in the world.

Here’s where you can find me on the web (besides HossTheBoss.com)

Hoss’s November Hossey Award Picks

By Don Cudd (aka Hoss) Saturday, October 11th, 2008

These are all the songs I’ve chosen for this month’s contest. I know thousands of independent musicians who are deserving of having their songs in this dang deal. So narrowing my picks down to just 10 is always the hardest part of my month. Oh well. Such is life.

Vote Now!

Show Schedule | Contest Rules | The Awards

Buzz Nuse - One Legged Farmer (Buy, Dang It)

Buzz Nuse is pretty dang funny with a lot of his songs, and this is one of his funnier ones. But what’s probably the funniest part of this whole deal is that, on his day job, Buzz is the mild mannered “Jim Nuse,” City Manager of Round Rock, Texas (just north of Austin and one of the largest cities in the state). Imagine a guy with a job like that doing a song like this. Only in Texas. And only, probably, only in Round Rock. Oh yeah, the main reason I chose this song off Buzz’s “Best Of” CD is that November is Thanksgiving month, and I couldn’t think of any songs that have turkeys in them. So a 3-legged ostrich will have to do for Thangsgiving Hoss style. Yum, yum.

David Martinez  - Walkin’ On Air (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

David is a middle school math teacher who has hellacious musical talent but isn’t worried about selling his soul to spring board a career. If he were looking, I’m confident he could find a big label that would sign him. But he’s not interested in that. No, good ole’ David Martinez is content to just hang out playing open mic nights right here in Corpus Christi, supporting the local music scene, and traveling the country with his music during the summers. I’m proud of him for that! This song is off the new CD that he’ll be releasing sometime soon. (Don’t rush him, dang it.) Dave does a lot of songs about the emotional turmoil of relationships. (I’m sure his students can relate to that topic like none other.) I like this one because it’s a happy kind of turmoil.

Doak Sneed -Looking Glass (Buy, Dang It)

This guy is a West Texas native who has been toying around doing intelligent music just under the radar of the American mainstream for about 40 years. From San Angelo to Nashville, Doak has earned the respect and friendship of independent musicians across America — including a couple of my friends in Corpus Christi who told me I needed to get Doak’s stuff on the station or else. I say this song is the most interesting piece in the contest this month. Something to get lost in. Just make sure you vote for it before you leave.

Jack Remington - Battered Old Guitar (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2

Jack is an independent singer/song writer who lives in Nashville and is proof that good ole’ country music is not quite dead yet. Jack and his partner Dollie McFarland have written songs covering every facet of life, but this one off their new CD named “Chameleon” is of utmost importance. It’s all about the traditions of music that every generation simply owes it to the previous to carry on. It makes me wonder if my generation is living up to its responsibility the way Jack has. This is an important song.

Pear Ratz - Killin’ U2 (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2

The Pear Ratz are from George West, Texas (smack between Corpus and San Antonio) and they’ve become a decent sized name on the Texas music scene since about 2005. I’m proud to say I knew these guys since just about the very beginning (they included me in the dang credits on their first CD. That’s the first time that’s ever happened in all my years on the music biz.) This song is the sequel to a song called “Talkin’ Myself Out of Killing You” that was on that first CD. The guy in the song is getting just a little closer to shooting the woman this time, but it’s interesting to note that he still hasn’t quite pulled the trigger yet. Will he do it on the band’s 3rd CD? Can’t wait to find out. (My guess is that she’ll end up taking him back and they’ll have three kids, and Child Protective Services will be regulars at their house. That’s the way these things usually end up.) I’m really glad that the ‘Ratz have apparently decided to pick this song as one of their “releases” from their second CD. I told singer Bob Strausse that I thought they should have released the first song, but he said he was worried that people would think he was a psychotic killer, not the kind of first impression you want to make when your just getting a band going — even in the semi- psychotic Texas branch of the biz. His releasing the sequal tells me that Bob is comfortable with the band’s status in the business these days. And that’s a great thing. If ya’ll aren’t already on board with the Pear Ratz, get there quick. These guys are worthy of the buzz. And, by the way, this song ain’t a bit autobiographical. Bob’s a completely sane guy who’s been married for at least 20 years and, as far as I know, has never really wanted to kill anyone. It’s just a dang song, people!

Rafael-alexandre Ramos - Malcom Y (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

This independent musician from Canada spends a lot of time setting news clips to a beat and creating tunes that have a left-wing bent. I’m writing this about 3 weeks before the American election, so I have no idea whether Barak Obama will be our President-Elect by the time most of you are reading this. But, even if he isn’t, I think the song is still timely and poignant, no matter what your political leanings are. (Not going to tell you mine, by the way. If you think you’ve got them figured out, why not shoot an email to tell me what they are. I’ll let you know privately if you’re right.)

Rene West - Closeout Sale (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

Rene teaches art at an Amarillo community college for her day job. By night, she writes a lot of tough, honest songs about living in the middle class. This song is one of those, and I think it rocks! Very timely, unfortunately.

Rip Tide - Stuck on E (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

These guys are a Corpus Christi favorite known for the daring, and exhaustingly energtic,  takes on a lot of Rockabilly covers. I’ve never seen anyone show up at one of their gigs and not leave saying, “Wow. Those guys were awesome!” Fortunately, the guys have found time over the years (between playing a ton of gigs, working a ton of day job hours, and playing with a local church band) to come up with one or two originals. This is one of them. They recorded it in 2002, but it becomes more and more relevant every day. Ya’ll sing along on your way to put another $20 in the pump.

Triggerfish - Tropical Illusions (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

This three man group from Port Aransas, Texas has played for Parrot Heads from across the world over the years (thanks to Port A being a popular tourist spot). Fortunately, they also do a little more than just cover Buffett songs. They have a lot of creative originals under their belt, and these songs all keep the Buffett tradition very healthy. This song is one of those. It’s the title track off the band’s second CD.

Ty Dietz - Emory (Buy, Dang It)
Dropped from the contest after Week 2

Ty Dietz knows how to write songs! Wow. If you’re not dead or something, this one will have you captivated. It’s great to know that this guy is just getting started on the Texas music scene. In fact, this is one of the only recordings you’ll be able to hear from him to date. We taped this live during an Open Mic Night at the Executive Surf Club in Corpus Christi where Ty was a regular before AWESOME paying gigs started coming his way very regularly. Ty is making all the right connections and doing all the right things to become the next big thing on the Texas music scene. Please remember where you heard him first, dang it. I take a lot of pride in introducing you to amazing talent like Ty Dietz!

He has 2 CDs available from MyTexasMusic.com, “1 Man, 1 Guitar” & “Just South Of Corpus”…

About Me:

I got started in broadcasting during my stint as a Signalman in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era, working part-time as a DJ and newsman for a ship-board Armed Forces Radio & TV station on the USS Truckee out of Norfolk, Virginia.  After being honorably discharged in 1979, I became a mainstream radio DJ and News Director in the Corpus Christi area for over 25 years on 9 different stations, including all 3 of the country-western ones. During that time I received 4 news broadcasting awards, 1 from the Associated Press & 3 from United Press International. I spent the last 5 years of my “career” on KFTX in Corpus Christi, constantly fighting with the program director over having to play their narrow top-ten Nashville music playlist of songs, when I really wanted to play Texas Music. I was finally shown the door after I played a Christmas-time phone request for Robert Earl Keen’s “Merry Christmas From The Family”, which was definitely not on the station’s playlist, (I really hate that word!). Now that I’m on HossTheBoss I can play what I want. I’m working on getting my own show started on the station by early 2009,  so I hope you’re listening….

Rockin D’s November Hossey Award Picks

By Rockin' D Thursday, October 9th, 2008

I’m Rockin’ D and these are my picks

Vote Now!

Show Schedule | Contest Rules | The Awards

Eleven Hundred Springs - Why Are You Gone So Long (Buy, dang it)

These are some true hillbilly stoners from Dallas. These guys are classic. I got the chance to sit and talk to the lead singer one day, and we talked about the hundreds of time’s he’s wanted to see the Grand Canyon from som many trips to Hollywood and back to Dallas. He said, on the only chance he really had to see it, some guy screwed it up by saying he had girls to meet up with in L.A., which was just a fluke. This band is Texas, through and through. I love ‘em every chance I get. There is no true two step to this. It’s all about the Chain Saw Move. Ha ha ha! Did you know the drummer was one of the original Toadies?

Honeybrown - Mile by Mile (Buy, dang it)
Dropped from the contest after Week 1

There is too much to say about this band with hits like “Texas Angel” , “I’m Here” and now “Mile By Mile.” I guess making babies does pay off and I believe Honeybrown is here to stay. Most people know them because of “Texas Angel” but I will always know about the truth behind the music and how these guys are so real on state. They take the time to do songs that relate to life. Honeybrowne is a wonderful group of guys, and I can’t wait to see ‘em live again.

Jake Kellen - College Days (Buy, dang it)

Its always great to hear music from real cowboys. The tales always seem to be much more in detail and true. This song is off an independently produced album, with dozens of great musicans. HornyToad records is proud to team up with amazing, brilliant musicians including Steve Hornbeak, Lloyd Maines, Brian McRae, Troy Wells, Todd Cadwell, Jimmy Mattingly. College Days is about a college student who can’t seem to make it to Chapel. Yes, Chapel! This song was written on the campus of Lubbock Christian College. It’s one of my favorites off the “Take Me Home” Album. I call it amazing country music. Look for other songs like “Red Roses, If I Could” - just magically makes a woman want to blush hearing the lyrics- dancehall favorites such as “Bullet Proof,” and we surely don’t want to forget September in Abilene. The Cap Gun Cowboy has an upcoming album in the works and let me tell ya, if you know anything about right down badass country music, songs like “Grace”, “Sail Away”, “Three Day Weekend”, and “Rodeo Girl” are just a few of whats on the new CD. Make sure to keep up with this guy! He’s always shooting videos near a dancehall or arena near you! Vote College Days, you may not relate to the West Texas wind but surely the hangover and church the next morning. All in All this is a wonderful guy and someone who you’ really enjoy sitting an talking with about life — an music.

Jordan Martin - Hold Me Now (Buy, dang it)

Jordan came to my attention via MySpace. I like the home recording. She seemed very different, just like how music should be. It had its own character and its own aim. The lyrics are powerful! Make sure to catch Jordan Martin live @ Sugarbrowns, the bright house, in Lubbock. I have never really been drawn toward depressing lyrics but I love the way he presents the sound he wants to have towards that certain song. I like what he brings to the Lubbock music scene and believe he’s here to stick around a while! This is a favorite aroun Lubbock,  and hopefully you’ll allow some of his music influence ya a tad bit!

Lee Tyler Williams - Two Day Stand (Buy, dang it)

“Lee Tyler Williams is a solid young singer/songwriter from Gatesville, Texas. The sound he produces is strongly influenced by Texas Country and 70’s Rock …new and old… with an occasional kick of the blues. The live show is an awesome mixture of different styles suitable for any crowd.” At least that’s what he said about himself on myspace. “A blues train, a rock n’ roll plane, and some country twang colliding with a Southern Peterbuilt………boy!” you get Lee Tyler Williams. Ty - as he is known to his closest friends — has a brilliant way of bringing all his influences of music together to make his own. He’s from Gatesville…Must go to myspace and check out what music he did capture. I’ve seen him perform in Olton, Texas at the Sandhills Celebration, also at the Old Town Cafe in Lubbock for the Dust Bowl Fest. Your going to like how this makes you feel when you buy into the sound! Vote Lee Tyler Williams & Rhythm Creek for that all around music junkie you are. This is for those who love to sit and listen to beautiful music for hours.

Mike Kelly - Lubbock (Buy, dang it)

Here is a guy with tattoos up and down his body and a mohaw for kicks. He lives in Oklahoma right now but loves the Texas scene. Mike is a great buddy of mine who also performs out in Nashville when he gets time away from his second job … work, hahahaha. He tries to stay on the road as much as he can, and he’s coming up with a new LP called “Come Back To Tulsa.” This song Lubbock does have a video out. It was shot by a brilliant young man out of Austin. Find it on YouTube. It’s worth your music junkie crave.

Sam Watson - Naked (Buy, dang it)

Hello Midland Texas!! Sam is,  in fact, from Midland. West Texan truth! She’s “just standing nake with the naked truth an has nothing to hide.” She’s up and coming quick. Sam “Naked” hit the air waves on KRFE 580AM in late April sometime,  but hasn’t seemed to stop getting the request from the South Plains listeners. I believe its from the heart. Great intentions with what she wants to do with her career. Its simply cutting it dry and simple for ya. “HERE IS THE TRUTH, SO WHAT,” she seems to say. I like this tune. Remember the name Same Watson from Midland. You Must Vote NAKED because you too stand at the end of the day with nothing on but the naked truth. March on and keep on keeping on!

About Me:

Hey, What up bitches.. I am Rockin’D.  I am former radio personality from KRSU 90.1 FM in Alpine on the campus of Sul Ross State University. I also helped launch Marfa’s 100,000 watt amp Public Radio on Febuary 14th ‘06 with Willie Nelson live at the Pete P. Gallego Center.  Dan Rather flipped the switch to make the station official. I’m currently at KRFE 580 AM in Lubbock where Buddy Holly recorded his first album and had a radio show called the Sunday Party. I am hosting a Texas Music show called the Friday party that airs.. you guessed it.. on Friday Morning.  I am an alumni of Olton High School — home of Waylon Jennings- just north of Littlefield, Texas. I have teamed up with Texas recording artist Jake Kellen, the official spokesman for the Texas Forest Service to promote wild fire awareness on the South Plains  and by volunteering my time to be Smokey the Bear for the Heart of Texas Fair in Waco.

While in Alpine Texas attending SRSU, I started my professional career at the Crystal Bar with out a damn clue of what a DJ should do.  I went up there with my AIWA speakers a 3 CD changer and some music thinking I was it.  As time went on, my skills improving and my name spreading, locals suggested that I needed to be on the radio.   My radio show, “papas con rice”, was a campus favorite and allowed me to interview artists such as Cory Morrow, Jake Kellen, Eleven Hundred Springs, Wade Bowen, Mark McKinney, Doug Moreland, Back Porch Mary, Brain Keane, Mike Kelly, Leslie Sawyer, Jordan Martin, South Austin Jug Band, Cellus & the Loose Grip, Reckless Kelly, Lee Tyler Williams & Rhythm Creek, Bleu Edmondson, and  marijuana music award winner poet Paul Bullock. I urge you to attend my favorite Big Bend Regional events that include Alpine’s Gallery Night and the Chilli Cookoff Festival… the Grandaddy of all chili cook-offs held at Rancho CASI de los Chisos in Terlingua, Texas the first weekend in November each year.

I relocated to Lubbock in 2006 shortly after the launch of KRTS in Marfa, and continued to book gigs as a Texas Music DJ in bars and dancehalls all across West Texas. I am the youngest of five and call Lubbock home for now. I am the son of Minerva and Florencio Gomez, and I am a proud Great uncle to Mercedes Q Hernandez, and I also have five neices and five nephews -all living in the Heart of the South Plains. I have a special lady in my life named Kimberleigh who makes my heart race and supports my dream like no other.

Click the links in the right column of every page of the site for more info. about which songs will be in the contest. You can also vote in the warm-up contest that’s, basically, designed to test our system. The first two times we’ve tried to have this contest, hackers have screwed it up for everyone. We’re working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen this time.
